The short version. NativeScan's AI features (AutoName, AutoSort, Recall) are an integral part of the App. When you invoke them, the content you ask the AI to process — typically one downscaled page image or some extracted text — is transmitted through a secure proxy operated by us, hosted on Cloudflare, to Google's Gemini API for processing. AI features cannot be separately turned off; by installing and using NativeScan you agree to AI processing as described in this Disclosure. AI output is generated by a third-party model and can be wrong, biased, misleading, or fabricated. You assume all risk for any consequence of any AI output. Never rely on AI output for legal, medical, financial, immigration, safety, or any other important decision.
1. What this Disclosure Is
This is a plain-language explanation of how NativeScan's AI features work and what happens to the content you submit. It is incorporated by reference into our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy and forms part of the agreement between you and us. By installing or using the App, you agree to this Disclosure and to the disclaimers and risk allocation in the Terms of Service. If you do not agree, you must not install or use the App.
2. The Three AI Features
- AutoName — generates a suggested title for a scanned document.
- AutoSort — suggests a category (for example, Receipts, Invoices, Medical, Identity, Legal, Financial, Work, Personal) for a scanned document.
- Recall — answers questions about your scanned documents using their extracted text content.
3. What is Transmitted, and When
AI features do not run on your device. When you invoke an AI feature, the following happens:
- The App prepares a payload on your device. For AutoName and AutoSort this is one page from the document, downscaled to a small image, or a short text snippet derived from on-device OCR. For Recall it is the question you typed or spoke, the most relevant text extracted from your documents, and a brief recent chat history.
- The payload is transmitted over HTTPS to a secure proxy operated by us and hosted on Cloudflare. The proxy is authenticated and accepts requests only from the App.
- The proxy forwards the payload to the Google Gemini API for processing.
- The model's response is returned through the proxy to the App and rendered on your device.
- Request and response bodies are not retained by our proxy after the request completes. Limited operational data (such as a short-term value used for abuse prevention) is processed transiently and not used to identify individual users.
4. Third Parties Involved
- Cloudflare operates the network on which our proxy runs. Cloudflare may process technical metadata (such as IP address) according to its own policies.
- Google runs the Gemini API that produces the AI output. Google processes content under its API terms and Gemini data-use policies. We have configured the App to use the Gemini API rather than Google AI Studio's consumer surface; this is the path on which Google's documented terms state that user content is not used to train models.
We do not control these third parties and do not assume their obligations. Any change in their terms or behaviour may affect what happens to content you submit; we may change AI providers at any time on notice through this Disclosure.
5. What is Not Transmitted
- Documents that you do not invoke an AI feature on remain on your device only.
- Voice for the Recall feature is transcribed on-device by Apple's speech-recognition framework; the audio never leaves the device.
- Your real name, email address, Apple ID, persistent user identifier, or location is not attached to any AI request by us.
- Biometric data (Face ID / Touch ID) is handled entirely by iOS and never leaves your device.
6. Important Limitations of AI Output
- AI can be wrong. Large language models are probabilistic. They can hallucinate, misclassify, mistranscribe, omit key details, and confidently state things that are not true. You must independently verify any AI output before relying on it for anything that matters.
- AI is not advice. AI output is not legal advice, medical advice, tax advice, financial advice, immigration advice, accounting advice, psychological advice, regulatory advice, professional advice, or any other form of advice. No advisor–client relationship is created by your use of the AI Features.
- AI output is not confidential. AI output is produced by a third-party model. We do not represent that the model's output is suitable for confidential, privileged, or regulated workflows.
- Output may reflect bias. Models can reflect biases present in their training data. We do not warrant that AI output will be fair, balanced, complete, or appropriate for any particular use, group, or context.
- Availability is not guaranteed. AI features depend on the availability of third-party providers and may be slow, degraded, or unavailable at any time without notice.
7. Sensitive Content
NativeScan can scan many kinds of documents, including identity documents, passports, banking statements, financial records, medical records, immigration paperwork, legal documents, employment records, and other sensitive material. AI features in this App rely on a third-party AI service. You are solely responsible for deciding whether any given document is appropriate to scan with an app that uses AI processing. Do not scan sensitive content with NativeScan if you are not comfortable with its content being processed by a third party. For workflows subject to legal or regulatory confidentiality requirements (for example, certain HIPAA, GDPR, solicitor–client privileged, PHIPA, or similar contexts), you should not use NativeScan without an independent legal review of your particular situation. We are not responsible for any breach of confidentiality, contract, professional duty, or law arising from your decision to submit a document to an AI Feature.
8. Do Not Rely on AI Output
You expressly acknowledge and agree that you will not rely on any AI output produced by the App for:
- any legal, regulatory, immigration, tax, financial, accounting, insurance, medical, mental-health, safety, security, or professional decision;
- any filing, submission, application, or representation made to any government, tribunal, court, employer, professional body, lender, insurer, or counterparty;
- any decision affecting the rights, health, finances, residency, employment, safety, or welfare of yourself or any other person;
- any contractual, fiduciary, or regulated obligation; or
- any other use where an error in the output could cause meaningful harm.
You will independently verify any AI output before acting on it, and you accept that any consequence of failing to do so is your sole responsibility.
9. Risk Allocation
To the maximum extent permitted by law, you accept all risk for any AI output produced by the App and waive any claim against the Operator arising out of the content, accuracy, completeness, timeliness, suitability, lawfulness, or consequences of any AI output, including any claim based on negligence. Our total liability for any AI-related claim is subject to the limitation of liability set out in the Terms of Service.
10. AI Use is Mandatory
AI features are an integral part of NativeScan and are not separately optional. The App is designed and offered as an AI-assisted document scanner; AI processing is part of what NativeScan does. By installing and using the App, you agree to AI processing as described here, in our Terms of Service, and in our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, you must not install or use the App, and you should delete it from your device.
11. Changes
If we change the AI provider, the data we transmit, or how we transmit it in a way that materially affects you, we will update the version number and effective date at the top of this Disclosure and, where reasonably practicable, require renewed in-app acceptance.
One more reminder. Treat AI output as a first draft, not as a final answer. Verify anything that matters. We will not be liable if you don't.
